"P.D.", "VIA DEGLI STATI SARDI" postal treaty handstamp and French "AUTR. PT. DE BEAUVOISIN 1 SEPT 55" entry cds, all in red on obverse, reverse with arrival cds (Sept 1). Minor edge wear not distracting from this fine and fresh three colour franking paying correctly the rate to France with 45 c. for Austria, 20 c. for the transit through Sardinia and 60 c. for France. Some patina, nevertheless an exceptional piece, the largest multiple known, signed E. Diena & H. C. Schwenn; cert. Sorani (2001) Sassone = € 60'000 for two strips of eight / Ferchenbauer = € 45'000 for two strips of eight.rnReference: The multiple is shown in Jerger - Allgemeine Frankaturen on page 94, when it was still attached together with two other blocks of 16 to a large sized registered cover from Bergamo to Rome. 1277 image1852: 10 c. black on rose, light archive fold, 40 c. black on dark-blue, and 1853 1 l. black on white, good to large margins all round and fresh colours, tied by six barred mute obliterator to 1855 entire letter to Philadelphia with crisp CARRARA (Sept. 30) despatch cds (Mioni type 3) in black, "P.D." in red but also "P.P." in black. Sardinian entry mark VIA DI SARZANA and "BOSTON BR. PKT. / OCT 26 / 5" (cents) alongside. Sarzana, Genova and Paris-Calais transit cds's on reverse. The Postal Convention between Sardinia and Modena, effective from 1 March 1855 set a rate of 190 c. for each 7.5 grams for covers to the USA. The PD mark was added erroneously as the addressee had to pay five cents from the port of embarkation. A fine and desirable item, signed A. 1279 image1858/60: Selection of three entire letters, including 1858 (January 2) 2 Gr. lilac rose plate I single franking with clearly determined first day usage on letter (slightly browned) from Naples to Tricase, one of the eighteen known letters (certs. Enzo Diena 1988 and Vaccari 1996), further entire letter franked with 2 Gr. rose carmine plate I tied by fancy cancel (svolazzo) from "Agnone 30 Ott. 1860" (Sass. 12 pt. signed G. Colla) as well as third letter bearing mixed franking of 20 Gr. 'falso d'epoca' type II (F9) and two examples of 2 Gr. rosa chiaro plate I on letter to "Gallipoli 21 Ago 1859".
