Framed 'P.P.' in red below, internal docketing of receipt (Nov 10). A remarkable cover - the sole recorded voyage of the Steamer "Republic" of the White Star Line to South America. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 200. One stamp with corner bend otherwise fresh and very fine: at the time, this was the fastest journey recorded to Valparaiso, just 33 days, whilst the RMSP / PSNC Steamers generally took 40 days. Reverse with oval datestamp of the Hamburg city PO (Dec 14). Cover transported from Southampton to Jamaica with RMSP 'Douro', thence to Colon with RMSP 'Solent'. Front shows "2s/3d" accountancy note applied in London. SE corner of the lower left 1 s. stamp replaced and file fold through the lower 7 s. adhesive, some perforation toning as to be expected from such an item sent overeas. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 202. In spite of its imperfections, an appealing Shipmail cover from the well-known Werner correspondence. Cert. Brettl (1987).rnrnRMSP 1867 (14. Dez.). Brief wurde von Southampton nach Jamaica mit der RMSP 'Douro' transportiert, dann weiter nach Colon mit der RMSP 'Solent'. Vorderseitig sind in London "2s/3d" verrechnet worden. Bei der linken unteren 1 Schilling - Marke ist eine fehlende Ecke hinzugeklebt, durch die untere 7 Schilling - Marke geht ein Registraturbug, einige wenige Zahnspitzen vom Gummi getönt, absolut üblich für einen Überseebeleg. Abgebildet in Edition D'Or 59 auf Seite 202. Eine seltene Frankatur aus der Werner-Korrespondenz. 5340 imagePSNC 1868: Entire letter from La Paz to Arequipa, Peru, endorsed "Por Vapor", franked by 1866/68 Condor 10 c. deep brown, two examples, positions 5 and 6 on the plate, with large margins all round, in a rich shade, tied by "CORREOS DE LA PAZ / RB" datestamp in black (Jan 16). Reverse with "Tacna" transit cds (Jan 22), thence to Arica and by PSNC Steamer to Islay and overland to Arequipa; where charged "10 cs." due in manuscript. An oustanding franking - the 10 c. brown was only ever used in La Paz - and one of just two covers known franked thus and carried by the Pacific Steam Navigation Co. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 204. Exceptional in all respects, a great rarity. Signed Calves. Certs. Carried on PSNC Steamer to Panama and thence on the RMSP "Don" to Plymouth. London / Paid transit in red and reverse with arrival (Jan 11). One of only two recorded covers with the La Chimba oval cancelling British stamps (both were in the Dale-Lichtenstein collection), Nissen provenance notation on reverse in pencil.
