5212 image1868: Napolêon laureated 20 c. milky-blue Type II, the imperforated variety called 'Lebaudy', a fine and fresh example with good to large margins, tied by clear Gros Chiffres '1769' numeral lozenge to entire letter written by a corn dealer in Liverpool. Despatched by the forwarder "Quesnel Frères" in Le Havre with corresponding light despatch cds (Aug. 17, 1870) alongside. Extremely rare, the usage of a 'Lebaudy' imperforated definitive on a letter originating in the United Kingdom is presumed unique. Certs. Brun (1978), Calves (1994) Yvert = € 27'500 / Maury 29/IIg = € 26'000.rnNote: A small number of imperforated Napolêon laurê 20 c. in a milky blue shade were given by the postal administration to the Post Offices in the Department Nord and also to Nancy. Most of them served on a correspondence between the trading houses Bobillon in Douai and Lebaudy in Paris, respectively Valenciennes, thereby the name to this variety. Reverse with timbre indicatif de chargement, ambulant and arrival cds's of the next day. Some folds and some corner wear not affecting stamps and postmarks, an interesting and rare usage.rnrnNote: In the value letter rate of July 1859, in use until May 1870, postage and a fixed rate of 20 centimes were franked with stamps, leading to the 60 c. franking for this double rate item. Two punch holes well away from the stamps, sensibly replaced, nevertheless a desirable four colour franking with 'pre-war' issues from the period before the Cêrès 1872 stamps became available. Minor edge wear not distracting from the exceptional quality of a rare high value franking. Cert.
