4052 imageFourth Printing Group 1871/72: 1 real yellow on white wove paper, an ill-defined coarse impression in a deep shade, paying the internal postage on 1871 mourning envelope to Bordeaux, France, tied by "3154" gros chiffres with "Quito / Franca" datestamp in red alongside (Feb 18). Reverse with British Post Office GUAYAQUIL datestamp (Feb 25) in black alongside red London transit cds (April 3). Obverse with three line dated PANAMA / TRANSIT (March 5) and framed "GB / 1F 90c." Anglo-French accountancy marking applied in London. Calais entry marking and charged "12" dêcimes due upon delivery. 4053 imageFourth Printing Group 1871/72: 1 real yellow on white wove paper, a single example crossed by file fold and a wonderful horizontal strip of seven showing parts of adjoining stamps at base, one stamp minor fault, used on 1872 entire letter to Lima, Peru carried at quadruple rate of 8 reales, tied by neat strikes of "Guayaquil / Franca" datestamps in red (Dec 26) with Lima arrival cds on reverse (Dec 31). The single stamp lifted for checking and is on vertically laid paper, and hinged back into original position. A remarkable franking and a most attractive cover.rnrnProvenance: Collection Bill H. 4064 image1865: 1 real green, two single examples and an exceptional usage of a sheet marginal diagonal bisect on 1867 'turned' cover front to Latacunga annotated at "4¾ oz." in manuscript, the adhesives all tied by "Guaranda" datestamps in black (Feb 20). Reverse with exceptionally fine pair of 1 r. orange-yellow tied by 64 dot lozenge cancellations in black and used back from Latacunga to Guaranda. A rare and attractive usage, we have yet to record another example of a marginal frameling bisect usage on cover. (Image 1)

It is unusual to find Ship endorsements on the Chavez correspondence although they are sometimes noted internally on arrival - this example is internally docketed "Vapor Santiago".
