3279 on cover FR2 image1878, MY 13 cover to F, Coleman Esq, 394 Gracechurch Street, Falkland Islands Comp, London E,C, with crispy clear strike of the red Frank at upper right and fine type F1 despatch cds at lower left, with 6 rate mark in magenta ink, indicating postage paid, alongside, Red LONDON E,C, arrival backstamp of JY 1 78, minor envelope creasing still a really fine and desirable cover, one of five known from the last mail beforehand the introduction of postage stamps, carried by the Black Hawk to Montevideo, and thence by RMSP Mondego to Southampton, the addressee was the secretary of the Falkland Islands Company, his customary/magenta docketing reveals the enclosed letter to have been written on May 7 by the Rev, Yeoman, Just 23 red Frank covers are recorded, this being one of the finest available, No 13/78 in the Barnes listing/illustrated in colour on plate vii, cat £ 26,000, XF-SUP! 3283 nh 71ca image1918-20, 1 d, orange-vermilion/comb perf, ERROR opt DOUBLE, the unique block of 12/6 x 2 from the foot of the single sheet that existed, with a spectacular paper crease which caused the first overprint to miss the lower left stamp entirely with the adjoining stamp receiving only a partial impression/the remainder of the overprint being applied to the reverse of the fold, necessitating a second pass through the press which resulted in the double overprint, Without gum as a result of immersion in water during the London blitz of September 1940, nontheless a magnificent showpiece of the biggest importance, comprising ten of the 58 possible samples of the double overprint, ex Marquess of Bute and Stanley/Spink 4 Mar 1998, lot 246, and mentioned in the Part I footnote below SG 72, XF-SUP! 3290 OG image1930, JA 5, 1 d, red P/S envelope type III/Heijtz E2c, used from South Shetlands and addressed to Miss G, Brechin, stanley by Gregor Brechin/administrator on Deception Island from 1928 until the final whaling season of 1930/31, with very fine type B2 cds/Superb extra strike at upper left dated JA 6 30, a little soiled and roughly opened at top but a very scarce and interesting usage, posted just two days after a major earthquake caused the harbour floor to drop almost 5m ! /Sir Hubert Wilkins reported the earthquake had swept the island, causing big holes in the ground, our ship was severely shaken, two bridges at the tank station were destroyed and four men were thrown from the oil tank, one was killed and the others were seriously injured, XF-SUP!
