1841 1d. red-brown, Alphabet I, plate 24, lettered "DB" tied by black Maltese Cross to entire dates 13 Apr. 1842 inside, addressed to Hamburg. The stamp with large margins, light corner creases, otherwise stamp and entire in a fresh state of preservation.
The letter was posted at the London Two Penny Post Receiving House in Stoke Newington (or Stamford Hill). The Foreign Branch in the London Chief Office "AP 14 1842" (backstamp) marked the letter as being underpaid with red handstamps "Return for '6' Postage" on front and "Return for Postage" on reverse, and the returned it to the sender. When the sender paid the full postage, the letter was marked 'Paid 6' in m/s confirmed by a "PAID/20 AP 20/1842" tombstone, and finally carried by Thames Packet to J.H. Ohlendorff, the founder and first Director of the Botanic Garden in Hamburg. This very rare and early foreign destination letter bears Hamburg arrival marking and red tax '2' (Hamburg Shillings) to be paid by the addressee on delivery. K.-A. Louis certificate.

1841 1d. red-brown, Alphabet I, plate 59, lettered "CJ" tied by Edinburgh numeral "131" to entire dated 'Edinburgh 21 March 1846' inside, routed 'Via France' to J.M. Farina in Cologne. The stamp touched at top otherwise fine.
This rare and early foreign destination letter was franked with 1d. only. In London (25 March 1846), the Foreign Branch Post Office identified the letter as underpaid and applied "Return for Postage" handstamps on front and back. The full postage "1/10" (1s.10d.) for letters from beyond London to Prussia for the normal route by Thames Packet via Hamburg was inserted by hand. Back in Edinburgh the sender decided not to route by Thames Packet via Hamburg. He now specified the route "Via France", paid "5" (Pence, red tax marking) postage to Calais, with respective postmarks and "AUS ENGLAND/PORTO v. CALAIS" applied in Aachen.
A rare and early foreign destination letter from Scotland to Cologne from the Farina (Eau de Cologne) correspondence. K.-A. Louis certificate.
