 China
Kwangtung, Hainan island, April 1950: 15 C./$10 green, a vertical strip-5 tied "Kwangtung.Yulinkong 39.4.3" (April 3, 1950) to cover to Sondermoning Post Chieming/Bavaria,
Germany US Zone. On reverse transits "Kwangtung Hoihow 39.4.4" and "HONG KONG 5 AP 50". - Sender is Lt. (ret.) engineer Erich Stölzner, military advisor to the KMT government 1928/57, which did not follow Hitlers order to return to Germany in 1938
and stayed. He was active with the Navy headquarter and the Marine Corps as instructor, in 1950 on Hainan and later evacuated to Taiwan. - The enclosed original letter by Stoelzner says a.o.: "April 3, 1950. I am now two months here in Yulin... work
here with a Navy Infantry Regiment, fortress and instruction courses. Their 80th arsenal also here, but in parts goes to Taiwan...troops good and reliable. Have to repulse daily landings (of PLA troops), up to now successful, actually a small group,
which landed two days ago, did some advance but now is encircled and soon will be over. Not so easy to risk a landing using junks". Two weeks later, the "Battle of Hainan" (April 16-30) started and the island became part of the PRC by May 1. Stölzner
continued his job another 7 years on Taiwan. - Amazing postal history document from the last month of KMT government on Hainan, sender and enclosed letter of high historical interest.
