1850, 11.6 cover from PUSSELAWA (Pusilawe) to Kandy showing a fine strike of the departure handstamp on reverse "PUSILAWE / POST" (Oxley #21 - "FREE" unrecorded; Proud #D2) with "Free, 11 June, 1850" inserted in manuscript. Lower left signature "GA M.B Worms"of Maurice Benedict de Worms (1805-1867), fabled as the "developer of Ceylon" brought the first tea seedlings together with his brother Gabriel from China in September 1841, and founded a nursery on his estate at Pusellawa. The signatory was a relative of Baron Anthony de Worms (1869 - 1938), one of the greatest students of Ceylon philately. In the foreword to Harmers' 1938 auction catalogue for the Baron's collection, it was stated he received important stamps "from uncles on the family coffee estates in Ceylon". A VERY RARE POSTMARK, UNRECORDED BY OXLEY WITH MANUSCRIPT FREE, MOST PROBABLY UNIQUE.

1857 (Dec 7) Entire letter from Shanghai to Cadiz (Spain), privately carried to Gibraltar, where it was handled by the agent James Speed with corresponding octagonal "FORWARDED/BY/JAs. SPEED" marking in blue, delivered to the Spanish mail and posted at the bordering town of San Roque, with application of Spain 1855 4cu red, tied by oval grid with "SAN ROQUE/16 FEB 58/CADIZ." cds adjacent, both neatly struck, receiving cds of Cadiz one day later on reverse, a highly interesting postal artifact featuring an extraordinary combination, of which only two covers so far recorded; cert. Graus (2000).

Note: The text, written in Spanish, was sent by a Spanish merchant. In order to avoid high Spanish charges, merchants from Spain requested the services of British packets to carry their correspondence to Spain via a forwarding agent in Gibraltar.

Tied by fair strikes of Tientsin seal handstamp and clear "CUSTOMS TIENTSIN NOV 10 89" double-ring datestamp, both in blue as well as "CUSTOMS SHANGHAI NOV 13 89" double-ring transit datestamp and arrival cds (Dec 22, 1889), both in black. On obverse France Sage 25 c. black on rose, tied by "SHANG-HAI CHINE 15 NOV 89" cds with postman's handstamp '419' in circle alongside. Cover opened out for display, a fine and fresh three-colour franking paying the 9 candarins rate to Europe through the French Post Office. Filing folds away from the adhesives, an attractive combination cover of Chinese and French issues. Cert. Robineau (1986).
