Express Victoria V.I." oval handstamp cancel, addressed to London, England, red New York transit and London receiving cancel, Extremely Fine, a rare combination of Canadia.... Sold for EUR 2,300

This auction offers remarkable Wells Fargo material... some that has not been available for decades. Some highlights:
  • 1862, 3c Pink on Buff (Scott U59), used entire with Wells Fargo printed frank at top and blue "Post Office Victoria V.I." coat-of-arms handstamp frank at top left, indicia canceled by large blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Victoria Jun 5" oval datestamp, second strike at bottom also ties 2c Black Jack and 5c Red Brown 1862 issues additional postage, the 2c is affixed over the handstamp frank, addressed to Sacramento, Extremely Fine, This cover was carried by Wells Fargo's from its office in Victoria directly to the addressee in Sacramento. The postage prepayment requirement was the same as if it went through the mails.(Lot 4584)
  • 1864/65, 3c Pink on Buff (Scott U59), used entire (tiny corner fault) with Wells Fargo printed frank at top and "Paid Dietz & Nelson's British Columbia & Victoria Express" in ribbon printed frank at left, indicia canceled by large blue "Wells Fargo & Co Victoria Sep 15" oval handstamp, addressed to San Francisco, Extremely Fine conjunctive use. According to Nathan's Franks of Western Expresses 1849-1896", George Dietz and Hugh Nelson acquired the express routes and business of William T. Ballou in 1862, serving the Cariboo mining region. They connected with Barnard's Express at Yale and Lillooet and with Wells, Fargo & Co. at Victoria. Dietz & Nelson sold to Francis J. Barnard in late spring 1867(Lot 4585)
  • 40c Black & Red Pumpkin 1861 (Scott U45), used legal sized entire with "Wells, Fargo & Co. Paid over our Mexican Coast and California Express. $1.40" Printed Frank at top center, indicia canceled by large blue oval "Wells, Fargo & Co. Mexican Route" handstamp, large blue oval "Wells Fargo & Co. Guaymas Express" handstamp at center, reduced at left and light creases, Scott catalog $4,500, with 2001 PSE certificate, ex Hall (who paid $75.00 in 1925) and signed "JAK" (John A. Klemann). A very rare item and one of the highlights of any collection.(Lot 4598)

  • 1853/55, 3c Nesbitt (Scott U9), used entire with Wells Fargo printed frank at top and gorgeous design of plant with "W.G. Walker Golden Gate Nurseries San Francisco Cal" in the largest leaf, indicia with well-struck large blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express S.Frco 29 May" double circle datestamp, addressed to Sacramento, Extremely Fine(Lot 4681)
