KENNEDY, the "Banker of the City of New York" to David Welch Esq. in Edinburgh, Scotland via London, privately forwarded to London, franked by Penny Black (Plate 4, lettered L-G) for British inland postage, tied by red Maltese Cross, and sent from Lombard Street P.O., with "L.S./16 JY 16/1840" Maltese Cross datestamp as well as Edinburgh '18 July 1840' arrival c.d.s. The 1d. black just touched at bottom, light vertical filing crease and corner crease at top right, otherwise good/large margins, neatly cancelled, stamp and entire are in a very fresh state of preservation. K.-A. Louis certificate + typewritten copy of the cover.
The sender was David Sproat KENNEDY (1791-1853), born in Scotland, sailed to New York in 1807 and became a most famous and important person in New York. His commercial house (Kennedy & Maitland) was one of the greatest commercial houses in the U.S. (around 1820), and Kennedy became the agent for several banks of Canada, and was the 23rd president of the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York. ONE OF THE EARLIEST FRANKED LETTER OF THE U.S.A., and WRITTEN BY A FAMOUS AND IMPORTANT PERSON.

Der vollständige Faltbrief ist dreimal gefaltet (Marken nicht tangiert) und bis auf eine leichte Beschädigung (durch Schürfung) im Bereich des Adressates in sauberer, ursprünglicher Erhaltung. Die Marken sind gut bis normal gezähnt und bis auf einen schwachen Eckbug (1 C. Marke) und einen winzigen Spalt links (obere 10 C. Marke) in tadelloser Erhaltung. A census and analysis by J.W.Rose & R.M.Searing lists 72 domestic usages of this stamp on cover, this particular cover is listed in the book, because it was recorded by Ashbrook and offered in Siegel sale (Sept.1961), it last appeared at Corey Long sale in 2007.
