BANTAM ESSAY: King Edward VIII. essay 3p. slate, with COMPLETE DESIGN (King's face), watermark Multiple Star inverted, Perf 14, TOP PAIR = TOP HALF SHEET with sheet margins on three sides, mint with one hinge mark on original gum, with a light brownish patch on upper left of front, a corner crease at top left (sheet margins only) and lightly toned gum. This essay was an attempt, by India Security Press, Nasik, to issue stamps of reduced size due to the shortage of paper during WW II, following the South African 'Bantams' of small size, but this idea was finally given up when the hostilties ceased in Europe. AN ATTRACTIVE AND EXTREMELY RARE HALF SHEET OF THE BANTAM ESSAY WITH KING'S FACE, ONLY A VERY FEW (MUCH LESS THAN THE ESSAY IN BLUE IN SHEETS OF EIGHT) WERE PRINTED - A MAJOR RARITY OF INDIAN PHILATELY, AND THE COUNTERPART TO THE LOWER HALF OFFERED IN THIS AUCTION TOO.
