1062 imageTHUNDERSTORM REPORT CARDS 1920's-30's extensive collection of over 2000 specially designed postcards sent printed paper rate with ½d or 1d frankings, the cards refer to thunderstorm and current weather conditions i.e. report of thunderstorm, thunderstorm severity, weather, wind, temperature, further observations and remarks, all detailed on both sides of the printed card.'The Thunderstorm census organisation, founded by an amateur meteorologist S. Morris Bower from his home in Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1924, spanned the regions of four British Monarchs until his death in 1982. Reports of weather conditions and thunderstorms were sent to Morris Bowers from the 3000 or so 'volunteers' observers throughout Britain, on specially designed cards, which could be sent 'by halfpenny post' (i.e. printed paper rate) if all entries refer solely to the thunderstorm and current weather.' 1074 image1850 entire letter bearing blue-green 'SHIP LETTER/NEWCASTLE TYNE' mark on 1d red cover ex Germany, remarkable 27th April 1850 EL (some wear & a few closed tears but not unattractive) from 'Harburg' (near Hamburg) to Newcastle but franked by an uncancelled GB imperf 1d red (4 close margins) - probably put on by sender, a newly arrived school teacher, in the hope that the ship's captain would post it on arrival. The Captain probably wanted his fee for delivery to the PO, so there is a mostly very fine rare blue-green 'SHIP LETTER/NEWCASTLE TYNE' (Rob S3, sole example recorded in this colour by Tarbeart) on the front, matching the VF c.d.s on the top flap & the 1d stamp was wasted, the letter being charged '6,' the full incoming Ship Letter rate for this route. The only example of this rare mark recorded other than the few black examples of 1869-71. Important exhibition item. (Image)
