US SCOTT #65 ON STEAMSHIP COVER USS SARANAC DUE 7 VIA PANAMA TO NEW YORKThe U.S.S. Saranac served in the Pacific from 1857-1869.
The rate was 10c for letters carried less than 2500 miles over sea plus land
routes in the U.S, in steamers considered as mail ships. Thus this cover almost certainly entered the U.S. mails at Panama and came by the Isthmus and the California steamer on the Atlantic side to New York.
The 3c applied was recognized and
was thus rated as 7ó due.
The U.S.S. Saranac was a side-wheeled frigate built in the late 1840s. (Image) (image2)
