178 image1919 (Nov 10) London to Paris first flight by A.T.&T., cover franked 4½d registered post + 2/6 air fee all cancelled at the London Chief Office, endorsed "By Aeroplane" and "Express", the 2/6 stamp with a corner fault prior to use, otherwise fine and scarce. This was the first official air mail service to a foreign destination; the plane could not cross the Surrey Hills due to fog and had to return, the mail being flown the following day. 179 Alan Cobham. c.1920-35 Picture postcards (23), covers (2) and ephemera including picture postcard of Cobham signed at Edinburgh in 1920, 1926 covers flown by Cobham from the S.S "Homeric" to New York or over Washington D.C both initialled "AJC", programmes for Cobham's Air Displays (3), postcards of competitors or planes in the National Aviation Day displays (22, five signed by pilots), tickets for flights (5), programme for C.W.A Scott's first flying display. 180 1921-97 Covers and cards, mainly prewar first flights, including 1936 cover from Harrogate to Cape Town flown by H.L Brook in an 86HP Praga Baby ultra light plane, 1940 cover from New York to an Engineer at British Overseas Airways at Southampton signed by the two pilots of the "Clare", etc., also four 1934-39 Air Mail leaflets, and a few labels or air stamps. 181 1927 (Aug 27) Fairhaven Sailing Club Annual Regatta, card attached to a balloon released from the regatta, found by George Ickerwood, Gamekeeper, near Simon Seat, Barden Moor, Bolton Abbey and posted from Appletreewick (Sep 6) franked 1d, to the sender of the balloon in Blackpool. Very unusual.

182 Schneider Trophy. 1927-31 Picture postcards (25), 1929 programme (cover faults), 1931 registered cover with "CALSHOT AERODROME / STHMPTN" skeleton datestamps and manuscript registration label, 1931 postcard from Gosport to Italy bearing a Schneider Trophy label, supposedly flown around the circuit prior to posting. (28).

183 Gambia / Germany. 1934 (Dec 7) Commercial cover from London to Bathurst "via Germany", carried on the Lufthansa Christmas flight (LH L43, which connected with the Graf Zeppelin pendulum flight at Bathurst) with the large green cachet "DEUTSCHE LUFTPOST / EUROPA-SUDAMERIKA / a / WEIHNACHTEN 1934" depicting a plane and Christmas decorations. Backstamped at Berlin (Dec. 14) and Bathurst (Dec. 17), vertical fold, otherwise fine and scarce.

Salmet flew mail during the 1912 Daily Mail Tour; Hubert was a pilot for the 1911 London-Windsor Aerial Post but crashed on his first flight. Five good autographs from famous pioneer aviators. (5).

198 image1911 (Sep 16) London to Windsor envelope proof with enclosed notepaper, both in an unissued green colour, curved flap, addressed to France franked KEVII 2½d, flown from Windsor to London with the Windsor code 2 c.d.s, St. Amiens Soult arrival backstamp (Sep 20). Some proofs were sold to the public and postally used when the standard envelopes began to run out, this example flown in the opposite direction to that stated on the envelope. Minor opening tears at upper edge, otherwise fine and very scarce, especially addressed abroad. Photo on Page 28. (Image1)

199 image1911 (Sep 9) London to Windsor envelope proof and enclosed notepaper both in an unissued pale reddish brown colour on pale blue paper, Aerial Post monogram omitted from the flap, a KGV 1d tied by the London Aerial Post c.d.s code 5 used at Hendon Aerodrome, backstamped at Edgware (Sep. 11). A few rare proof envelopes in unusual colours were apparently sold at Hendon on the first day when the regular envelopes began to run out. Fine and very scarce. Photo on Page 28. (Image1)
