General Gordon & the Siege of Khartoum, 1884
Lot Symbol Descrip Opening
1934 image1884 (Feb 18) Egypt 20pa postcard written by General Gordon on the day he entered Khartoum, addressed to Rev. Horace Waller in England, "KHARTOUM" c.d.s (Feb 19) applied below the stamp which was cancelled in transit at Alexandria (Mar. 11), Assiout transit c.d.s (Mar. 8). The message includes "we are just entering Khartoum having left London on 18th Jany. ...... Hicks had 10,000 men who marched out, not one has escaped. All their bones whiten the plain near Obeid. He appears to have been betrayed by a trick to go through their woody country, it is terrible to think of him winding his way into the Lions den, with all his movements known to his enemy, who when he chose, shut his mouth on him". An exceptional card to Waller, who had travelled in Central Africa and campaigned against slavery; Gordon describes the massacre of the 10,000 Egyptian forces under General Hicks at El Obeid. Light diagonal crease and minor edge tear, unique. Photo on Page 230. (Image1) (Image2) (All Images)
