1812 U.S.S "Lancaster". 1885 (May/June) Covers to the Erie, Pa., both with enclosed letters written on the Flagship "Lancaster" at Jamestown, franked Crown CA ½d + 1d + 6d with type K45 or K46 cork cancels, MY 18 c.d.s with usual type "85" year, JU 8 c.d.s with italic "85". The first letter of May 17th talks of Angola and West Africa; the June 5th-7th letter describes St. Helena including a visit to Longwood, and a dance attended by locals, passengers from the clipper ship "Torrens" and H.M.S "Boadicea" where the band from the "Lancaster" played. (2).

1813 imageU.S.S "Lancaster". 1886 (Apr 23) Cover from Montevideo to "Dr S.H Griffiths, U.S Navy, U.S Flagship "Lancaster", St. Helena, c/o United States Consul" and endorsed "via Str Galileo", franked Uruguay 10c, missent to New York (May 26 backstamp) and returned, then carried on the "Tartar", handstamped "T" and charged 1/1, St. Helena arrival c.d.s (July 2, italic "86" year). Walton. Vertical fold and minor staining but very unusual; censor cachets on incoming mail were rarely initialled by the censors.
