153 1855-57 Covers to Fulneck, Leeds, one from USA with red "PAID 24" and "PAID IN / AMERICA / LIVERPOOL" datestamp redirected with 1d red cancelled by Leeds sideways duplex; the other cover from Dublin franked 1d, redirected to Saxony, Leeds sideways duplex backstamp. Also two unused pictorial envelopes with comic scenes around a space for the stamp, one with a 1d red. (4).

154 1871-1902 Covers (9) including 1871 mourning envelope from Newquay to Ceylon franked 1867 3d + 9d straw each cancelled by horizontal oval "C22" obliterator (Parmenter rarity H - no dated copies known), 1896 cover franked 1d + 1½d to Madagascar, 1889 registration envelope from Curragh Camp, etc. Also 1877 4d sage-green plate 16 and 1883 3d on 3d (S.G. 153, 159) used. 159 Post Office Secretaries. 1797-1960 Covers, letters and photos including 1797 (Mar. 10) letter from Anthony Todd at the General Post Office to Daniel Braithwaite concerning the appointment of Francis Freeling as joint Secretary alongside Todd; 1808 letter from Freeling at the G.P.O regarding a submission to the joint Postmasters General; free fronts signed by Freeling or with W.L Maberley handstamp with differing "To be / delivered / Free" handstamps; 1822 O.H.M.S wrapper and 1834 front signed by Freeling and 1829 front signed by Maberley; Returned Letter Office wrappers or envelopes (5); official Post Office envelopes (12); 1858 cover from Stamford Hill franked 2d addressed to "Rowland Hill Esq., Gen. Post Office, St. Martins le Grand"; Rowland Hill signature on piece; S.A Blackwood letter, etc. An interesting collection. (32).

160 Balloons. 1845 Handbills printed by S.G Fairbrother of 31 Bow Street, Covent Garden, the first advertising the night ascent by balloon by Mr Green, the intrepid aeronaut, from Cremorne Gardens, King's Rd, Chelsea; the second that, in consequence of the destruction of Mr Green's balloon and injuries sustained he will no longer attempt night ascents, and his next balloon ascent on August 27th will therefore be at 6pm instead of 10.30pm as previously advertised. Two very rare early ballooning handbills (117x245mm & 128x187mm), the first superbly illustrated with a picture of crowds cheering as Green's balloon ascends into the night. (2).

161 Balloons. 1907 (Oct 12) Daily Graphic balloon postcard flown from Crystal Palace, dropped from the balloon at Mellerud in Sweden, endorsed by the finder A.V Mickow. Posted three months after the flight with Mellerud c.d.s (25 Jan 1908), boxed "T" and unusual blue boxed "25 / cent", a 2d charge mark applied in the London Inland Section.
