827 Boer War. 1900 (Apr 20) Registered cover to England bearing Bechuanaland Protectorate 2d (2) + 4d paying the 8d rate, each cancelled by "CROCODILE POOLS / SOUTH AFRICA" c.d.s (used at the Base Camp Post Office at Gaberones) with a further strike below, red Registered datestamps of Bulawayo and London (May 25). Edge faults and the front and reverse glued together, nevertheless a very scarce use of the Crocodile Pools c.d.s on a registered cover.

828 Boer War. 1900 (May 26) Stampless cover to East London, headed "O.H.M.S" and signed by Lt. Col. P.A Hare Commanding the Protectorate Regiment, "MAFEKING" c.d.s with large dot at base (year omitted), partial arrival backstamp. Posted nine days after the siege ended, this unusual Mafeking c.d.s used during the siege on telegrams, but occasionally found on siege stamps and on mail after the siege. Flap cut away with small repair to upper edge, unusual.

829 Boer War. 1901 (May 29) Stampless cover to England endorsed "on active service, J.E Parry, A.L.H, Kuruman B.B" and signed by an officer, with Kuruman squared circle, Kimberley and London Paid (June 29) datestamps. Minor edge staining, otherwise fine, an unusual cover from a soldier in the Australian Light Horse sent a month after the second siege of Kuruman.

834 Balloons. 1891-1902 Postcard and letters (2) from pioneer balloonists, the 1893 10c postcard from Brussels to the Belgium section at the Chicago Exhibition, written by Edmund Duyk, with his cachet "EDMOND DUYK / AERONAUTE BELGE" featuring a balloon; 1891 printed letter from George Thiel bearing his Photo and a printed balloon, sent to the Mayor of Ghent offering to provide balloon ascents at fetes; and similar 1902 letter from F. Henrotin to the Mayor of Cuesme with superb engraving of his balloon showing the American trapeze artist Miss Leo Dina suspended below the balloon by her teeth. Three unique items. (3).

841 1913 Ghent Exhibition, "Post Aerienne" postcards sold for 1f each and flown from the exhibition (3, May 25 - July 31) to Blankenburg, the final card addressed to London with arrival c.d.s and 5c tied by special violet Blankenburg handstamp, all with large violet cachet. Also other exhibition postcards (12) and labels (29), and 1960 book by R. Hubinont on these flights. (44).

845 image1793 (Nov 3) Entire letter from St. George's to Norwich, Conn. endorsed "P. Sloop Patty via N. York", handstamped "N. YORK. Nov 21" with manuscript "Sh19" (4c ship letter + 15c inland postage). The letter describes the terrible hurricane which destroyed many ships and houses but which the writer's ship somehow sailed through, the price of provisions sold, and the miserable place and people. A fine and rare early letter, very few letters recorded from Bermuda prior to 1806 when the first packet called at the island. Ex Ludington. Photo on Page 102. (Image1)

847 1814 Entire letters from a sailor on H.M.S "Plantaganet" to his parents in Buckinghamshire, the first from Bermuda (Jan 15) privately carried to England and posted at Cullompton with undated circle on reverse, charged 11d; the second letter written en route to England with five other naval ships escorting a convoy of 45 sail, posted upon arrival at Deal. The Bermuda letter describes his passage back to the ship, cruising off New York as part of the American blockade, and his voyage in a schooner prize of the "Narcissus" which lost its main mast in a gale. (2).

848 image1819 (Aug 7) Entire letter from Dr Riddell on H.M.S "Euralyus" at Bermuda, to Scotland, with "PORTSMOUTH / SHIP LETTER", disinfected at Motherbank with vinegar and two chisel slits. The "Euralyus" struck a rock at St. Martins and is at Bermuda for repairs, fever is raging on shore killing half the garrison and inhabitants at St. Georges, two midshipmen from the ship who visited relatives have died; Riddell finishes the letter from the naval hospital where he also has fever and was delirious for a week. Disinfected mail from Bermuda is very scarce. Photo on Page 104. (Image1)

849 image1822 (Feb 23) Entire to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in London, signed "Wm Lumley, Lieut. Gen. & Governor & Com. In Chief of the Bermudas" privately carried to London and posted in the 2d Post, with "T.P / Chas. St. Westmr" and "2". Sir William Lumley, Governor in 1819-22 and again in 1825, was the most disliked Governor of all time. Very unusual, ex Ludington. Photo on Page 102. (Image1)

850 1829 Letters concerning the appointment of the Deputy Postmaster sent to the Governor, Sir Hilgrove Turner, a June 10th letter from Sir Francis Freeling at the G.P.O in London increasing the salary from £20 to £50 per annum; and an August 27th letter from James Taylor accepting the office of Deputy Postmaster though the salary is still too low to live on without other business, and he hopes other funds will be paid for rent and expenses. Two interesting and unique letters, not posted. (2).
