815 Warren Expedition. 1885 (Sep 28) Stampless cover from Lord Methuen serving with the Warren Expedition in Stellaland, to his wife at Muizenberg, apparently hand carried by a colleague to Cape Town where it was posted, initially charged 4d, increased to 6d upon redirection to Wynberg. An unusual cover, with datestamps of Cape Town, Muizenberg and Wynberg, minor staining, otherwise fine. Also an Ogdens Guinea Gold cigarette card of Methuen.

816 1885 (Oct 14) Letter from Rev. A.J Wookey at Molepolole, to Col. Carrington, asking if a permanent weekly or fortnightly post could be arranged through Mafeking to the Molepolole area, mail currently comes via Transvaal, and is a purely private post between Molepolole and Zeerust. The reverse endorsed "Col. Carrington, This was brought down by the Molepolole patrol returned yesterday, Oct. 18. Alfred Bethen, Adjt BBP, Mafeking 19.10.85". A unique letter sent just two weeks after the declaration of the Bechuanaland Protectorate, carried by police patrol.

818 Mail Coaches/Carts. 1890-92 Documents comprising 1890 printed tenders for the conveyance of mails between Vryburg and Mafeking by post cart, one also tendering for the Mafeking to Bulawayo route; 1891 printed timetable for the Vryburg to Macloutsie mail card (almost split in two); 1891 copy letter to Chief Lenchwe at Mochudi asking why he had prevented road repairs through Mochudi, with his telegram in reply stating roads are too narrow for the mail cart which will endanger lives; timetable for the proposed Mafeking to Pelakwie Camp post cart; 1892 timetable for the Vryburg to Palachwe and Macloutsie mail coach; also passenger tickets, receipts, etc. (14).

819 imageRhodesia - Gubulawayo. 1891 Covers from Gubulawayo bearing British Bechuanaland 1888 6d, a long cover to Kimberley franked 6d pair cancelled "678" with a good "GUBULAWAYO" c.d.s alongside, and a cover to Johannesburg franked 6d tied by a poor c.d.s, both with vertical folds, the second also with large opening tears, nevertheless very scarce early covers from the Trans-Protectorate, located within Mashonaland with the postal service operated by Bechuanaland from August 1888 until the B.S.A Co took over the mail service in May 1894. 821 Macloutsi. 1892 Covers from the Sitwell correspondence to England, the first with 1886 6d tied type D1 c.d.s (part enclosed letter, referring to bayonet exercises and a court martial); the second with type D2 c.d.s (Dec 4) alongside manuscript "6d" with 1891 6d applied over this and cancelled in transit by "555" of Vryburg. An unusual pair, Macloutsi had presumably run out of stamps in early December 1892. (2).

Also a small size Cape postal notice "Correspondence for British Bechuanaland Protectorate" showing the letter rate from the Cape increased from 2d to 4d on 1st November 1892. (2).
