551 India. 1817-39 Entire letters including India Letter handstamps of Portsmouth (2), Weymouth, Dartmouth, Dover (2) and Brighton, 1834 letter unusually sent within an envelope (charged double instead of triple rate), circular "CALCUTTA / POST NOT PAID", oval Out Station Madras Ship Letter and blue boxed "HYDERABAD / POST PAID", 1839 letter sent via Egypt with red boxed "NASEERABAD / Paid", etc. (9).

552 imageIndia. 1833 (Sep 28) Entire letter headed "From Sergt Harding, Foundry Department, Fort William, Soldiers Letter" and countersigned by a Major as "Superintendent & Director of the Foundry", charged 3d (1d soldiers rate + 2d ship postage) with large circular "INDIA SOLDIER & / 3 / LONDON" (InSol5), exempt from the Scottish ½d fee as a soldiers letter. The letter is written by Mrs Mary Harding to her Grandfather in Perth; her mother has died leaving three young children, and she asks for support for their upbringing. Plague and fever are ravaging the country killing hundreds. File folds, otherwise fine, an unusually good strike of the India Soldiers rate handstamp. Also an 1833 letter from East India House to the mother of a Private soldier serving in India, informing her that she can write to him prepaying the letter at the 1d soldiers rate. (2).
