239 imageOliver Cromwell. 1653 (June 9) Entire letter from Robert Lilburne at Dalkeith, addressed "For his Excy General Cromwell these, Hast Hast att Whitehall". Lilburne complains of a shortage of stores, there being less than 700 barrels of powder in all of Scotland; he asks for further stores to be sent, money for the forces and victuals for ships. Lilburne, a Commissioner at the trial of Charles I, was one of the 59 who signed the King's death warrant; he was sentenced to death in 1660, commuted to life imprisonment. A rare "Hast Hast" endorsement on a Commonwealth letter from Scotland to Oliver Cromwell. Photo on Page 30. (Image1)

245 Scotland. 1757-1801 Free letters, 1757 entire letter from Keith to the Sheriff at Banff concerning a warrant to transport women prisoners, accused of wilful fire raising, to Aberdeen for their trial, inscribed "To be delivered by the Postmaster of Banff on receipt containing warrant for transporting prisoners" and endorsed "Free, "KEITH" handstamp (faults); and 1801 entire to Perth signed by W. Kerr, Secretary to the Post Office in Scotland, with "GENL POST OFFICE EDINR / SOLICITOR" wax seal. (2).

248 1824 (May 7) Entire letter simply addressed "F. Freeling Esq., G.P.O" delivered free of charge, reverse with oval datestamp and "T.P / Lombard St". The letter, from Alex Chalmers, reproduces a 1661 Post Office notice establishing free postage to or from M.Ps during the sitting of Parliament. A unique item, ex Bottomley.

249 Bishops. 1717-1840 Entire letters, entires and some fronts (86), the fine written up collection with franked mail from or to many different Bishops in England, Scotland or Ireland, including changes in the diocese of individuals, amalgamation of diocese, associated letters to Francis Freeling concerning election as a Bishop or incorrect charges on letters with one letter from Percy Jocelyn, the Bishop of Clogher who was charged with "immorality, incompetence, sodomitical practices, habits and propensities" after being caught in flagrante with a Grenadier Guardsman in 1822 (forfeiting bail and fleeing, never again heard of until his death in 1843), 1727 entire letter from the Archbishop of Canterbury, some early town handstamps, etc., also various picture postcards mainly of cathedrals. (86+).
