POSTAL HISTORY: 1914-19 WWI collection comprising Military Field Post Cards x150 (approx) with a wide variety of different unit postmarks & cachets noted 'SMS KAISER MAX' and plenty of interest in the messages such as "... it is a certainty we were betrayed, as three of our own men escaped to them ...", then mail to Austro-Hungarian POWs in care of the Danish Red Cross or Russian "Moskauer Hilfscomite" in Denmark x200 (approx) including quite a number from Hungary, a batch of Austrian POW cards x20+ to prisoners in Italy many sent from Prag and other Czechoslovakian towns, plus a group Russian POW cards to Austria x60+ with various different forms including reply portions, Russian censors & postmarks, a little civilian mail also, wide range of censor handstamps & labels, condition a little variable but many are fine to very fine. POSTMARKS: 'BUKA/(DEUTSCH-/NEUGUINEA/16 11/14' cds (Powell #91) superb large-part strike in violet on 'G.R.I./1d.' on 3pf SG 16 (Cat £110). Rated F. The German cds saw limited philatelic use in the early days of the Australian Occupation. This use appears to predate the issue on 16.12.1914 of the 5mm Overprints, but the postal clerk had been unable to change the date slugs. Ex David Hopper. [Erich Schlieper's ('Ello') two lesser strikes on a small GRI piece sold at our auction of 14.3.2009 for $3495]
