AUSTRALIAN: 1912 Kinsey cover to Christchurch with New Zealand 1d Dominion 'VICTORIA/LAND' overprint affixed at U/R tied by 'BRIT ANTARCTIC EXPD/3MR/12' cds and Tasmania 1d Pictorial affixed at L/L tied by 'HOBART/25MR13/TASMANIA' cds, 'LOOSE SHIP'S LETTER/POSTED IN/ANTARCTICA/[penguin]/SY AURORA/ AAE' cachet at U/L partly overstruck by ''AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC/EXPEDITION 1911/COMMANDER OF SHIP' cachet with signature "JK Davis", very fine. [A similar cover sold at our Online Auction on 20.2.2021 for $1797] John King Davis - Douglas Mawson's deputy - purchased the ship in 1910. In late-1911 the Aurora transported Mawson and his party to Macquarie Island and then to Cape Denison, which became base camp for the Expedition. She returned in late-1912 with fresh supplies and left a party to wait for Mawson who was overdue from a sledging trip. In late-1913, 'Aurora' finally picked up Mawson and his party and returned them to Hobart in February 1914.

1914 (Sept) usage of 'TSS Berrima' picture postcard endorsed "HMAS Berrima - On Active Service - no stamps procurable", sent unfranked to "CE Pettitt Esq, Aborigines Protection Board, Sydney" from member of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) en route to occupy German New Guinea, on arrival '1D'-in-circle h/s applied and Postage Due 1d affixed alongside tied 'DELIVERY ROOM/-7SE14/GPO/SYDNEY' cds, a couple of very minor blemishes. The Berrima was commissioned from P&O at the outbreak of WWI and is famous for having landed troops at Herbertshöhe on 11 September 1914, at Rabaul on the 12th and at Madang on the New Guinea mainland on the 24th. She returned to Sydney in early October where she was converted to a troop transport and, in December 1914, she was part of the Second Convoy to Egypt.

1914 usage of 'Bougainville' real photo picture postcard showing natives in front of huts sent unfranked to Sydney dated "27.10.14", endorsed "Garrison Duty Rabaul" and "No stamps procurable" and signed "Lt EW Kirke, C Coy, Rabaul Garrison", on arrival very fine strike of '1D'-in-circle h/s applied and Postage Due 1d affixed alongside tied by light barred numeral killer, a couple of minor blemishes. Free postage for WWI servicemen was not introduced until February 1915, but mail in the earlier period was taxed at single deficiency only. Lt Errol Wharton Kirke served as Adjutant to Colonel Paton at Rabaul during the first few months of the occupation of German New Guinea, then returned to Sydney, later leaving for Egypt with the rank of Captain. He served on Gallipoli and later in France, where he was killed in action at Pozieres on 4.8.1916.

Unique! Ex Marquess of Bute. BPA Certificate (2017). [Robert Gibbs states at p127 "One unused example has been recorded..."] The incomparable collection of GRI Overprints formed by the Marquess of Bute was sold in London in 1959. It was noted that some of the albums were damaged as a result of the London Blitz when, on 24-25.9.1940, the bank in which the collection was secured was damaged by a direct hit by a German bomb. The discolouration of this stamp was caused by smoke from the resultant fire.
