GIBRALTAR: 1772 Stampless letter addressed to "GENERAL CORNWALLIS / GIBRALTAR" from Captain (George) Watson commanding the HMS Pallas datelined 9 Feb 1772 requesting quarantine., CORNWALLIS was a famous British General. He assisted in putting down the Jacobite Rebellion, he settled in Halifax and was the first Governor of Nova Scotia 1749-52. Cornwallis acted as a groom to both King George II and King George III, this letter came to him when he was the Governor of Gibraltar from 1762 until his death in 1776. He was married to the niece of British Prime Minister Robert Walpole in 1752.,
