Lot No:327
Symbol:/ On

Antarctica: British Graham Land Expedition 1920-22: Real photographic postcard showing expedition members Maxime Lester and Thomas Bagshawe with magistrate Arthur Bennett and captains Hansen and Anderson in front of the shack in which they overwintered at Waterboat Point, the card produced and sent by Bennett to his son in Stanley franked by Falklands 1d. tied by fine strike of “DECEPTION ISLAND/26 JAN 1922/SOUTH SHETLANDS” oval in violet. Very rare. Heijtz certificate (2021) On Jan. 12 1921 the four-man Expedition, led by John Lachlan Cope and originally conceived to a much larger design arrived at Paradise Harbour and landed on a small island with a promontory they named ‘Water-boat Point’ due to the presence of an old whaler’s boat which, with attached cases of provisions, was to serve as an improvised hut with an extension added before winter arrived. After the early departure of Cope and his deputy Hubert Wilkins, Bagshawe and Lester voluntarily remained in pursuit of a varied scientific programme although lacking many important items of equipment, until relieved in Jan. 1922, becoming the smallest British expedition to overwinter successfully in Antarctica.
