NEW ZEALAND: 1913 cover to "Captain AL Valentine, P&O SS 'Oriental', Shanghai, China" addressed in the hand of Lt Wilfred Bruce, navigating officer on the expedition ship 'Terra Nova' and initialled "WMB" at lower-left with 1d 'VICTORIA/LAND' overprint tied 'BRIT ANTARCTIC EXPD/JA18/13' cds, 'LYTTELTON/12FE13/NZ' transit and 'SHANGHAI/MR14/13/BPO' arrival b/s, couple of very minor blemishes. An extraordinary origin/destination item!

Lt Bruce had travelled to the Far East in 1910 on the SS 'Oriental' to assist Cecil Meares in transporting the dogs and ponies purchased for the expedition to Lyttelton, and presumably was writing to her Captain to advise its outcome. This cover is postmarked on the day the 'Terra Nova' arrived at Cape Evans to relieve the expedition.
