Benjamin Roth to Massachussetts with ship’s expedition cachet on reverse, bearing 1/2c. block of four cancelled by ship’s duplex of June 19 1930, enclosing fascinating and informative letter written months earlier headed “aboard the City of New York/at the Bay of Whales/Antarctica/Jan 31st” in which Roth tells of his recent close call, falling into the sea when the ice barrier cracked during unloading, “Commander Byrd jumped into the water trying to save me but could not reach me on account of the ice and because I was drifting to (sic) fast . . . Antarctica: German Expedition 1901-03: 1905 (Dec 31) printed "DEUTSCHE SU¨DPOLAR EXPEDITION" envelope and two page letter on expedition stationery written and signed by Emil Werth to fellow botanist Carl Skottsberg in Sweden, sent from Berlin franked 10pf. pair. A very scarce item from the later planned expedition which never transpired. Emil Werth (1869-1958) served on the ‘Gauss’ expedition and headed the Kerguelen station in a small group independent of the main expedition, overwintering in 1903, during which meteorologist Josef Enzensperger died of vitamin deficiency. Antarctica: ‘Operation Highjump’ 1946-47: USS “Pine Island”, two ‘Penalty for Private Use’ envelope sent officially from medical officers on board, stampless and with U.S. Navy 15763 BR. duplex, the first (Jan. 11, with “1946” year error) to Commander Western Sea Frontier in San Francisco on the day of discovery of the crash site of the aircraft “George I” in which the captain of the ship had been travelling, the second (Jan. 17) with Task Force 68 cachet sent to the Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington DC sent five days after the survivors had been recovered. Henry Howard Caldwell (1905-1985) was declared officially missing after the flying boat (in which he was an observer) crashed on the Thurston peninsula. Three of the crew were killed and Caldwell, with other survivors, was marooned for thirteen days before rescue. Photo. (Image1)
