Antarctica: Australasian Expedition 1911-14: Picture postcard of the S.Y. “Aurora” sent by Bellgrave Ninnis with short message headed “Antarctic Jan 7th 1912” to London, carried on the “Aurora”, franked by Tasmania 1d. Pictorial cancelled by Hobart Mar. 12 1912 c.d.s. with “LOOSE SHIP’S LETTER/POSTED IN/ANTARCTICA/ (penguin)/S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.” cachet below. Ex Harry Evans. Lt. Bellgrave E.S. Ninnis of the Royal Fusiliers, was a surveyor and one of two expedition members in charge of the Greenland dogs. On Nov. 10 Ninnis left as one of the three man ‘Far Eastern’ sledging party toward Victoria Land led by Mawson and on Dec. 4 he, his sledge and dog team vanished into a crevasse. Wharton MA-1. Photo. Antarctica: British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09: 1907 (Dec. 21) New Zealand 2d. stationery envelope addressed to a Capt. Russell (not a member of the expedition) at King Edward VII Land, sent from Christchurch endorsed “Per “Nimrod” with uninked Lyttelton machine cancellation and framed Christchurch Unclaimed octagonal datestamp of “9 MAR 1908”, backstamped Lyttelton Jan. 1 and, unusually, by fair Br. Antarctic Exped. c.d.s. of “FE 3/08”. Scarce, around 800 items not addressed to expedition members were retained at the base after delivery on the “Nimrod” but were reported destroyed. Rudmose-Brown in Aberdeen, redirected to the Scottish Oceanographical Laboratory, backstamped Lyttelton Mar 7, Aberdeen and Edinburgh arrival on Apr. 18. Also unused postcard showing the Return of the Southern Party (Wharton GA-12).The “Nimrod” had returned in Feb. 1909 and on Feb. 4 had collected the returning Northern Party, picking up the Southern Party on Mar. 4 and arriving back at Lyttelton on Mar. 23. Robert Neal Rudmose-Brown (1879-1957) had accompanied William Speirs Bruce as naturalist on the 1902-04 Scottish National Antarctic Expedition and had later joined Bruce as his assistant at the Laboratory.
