Great Britain 1989 Imperforate Souvenir Sheet on Benham First Day Cover, numbered D103 and postmarked MAR.21.1989 with Ayr Philatelic Counter pictorial c.d.s. cancels. The cover has a silk cachet "The Highlands and Islands" with Benham address and logo at bottom. The franking is an imperforate Scottish souvenir sheet containing 8 Scottish Machins and a label in center (Scott #SMH45a), with paintings and text on poets and authors Burns, Scott and Smith. Even though it is thought that only 20 imperforate souvenir sheets were printed, it is unlisted in Stanley Gibbons and Scott, and we believe this first day cover to be unique. This is amplified by the accompanying letter from A. Buckingham, Managing Director of Benham (who created this FDC) explaining that they originally sold this cover for over £3,000 at the time, and that they felt that was far too cheap, as similar items had previously sold for over £6,000 and thought it should be worth over £8,000. A rare and unique opportunity for the advanced Great Britain or Machin specialist, very fine. Rsv. $2,200. (Image)
