Great Britain 1976 Zagreb Croatia Plane Crash Recovered Cover, mailed from Edinburgh SEP.8.1976 to Turkey, and the plane carrying the cover crashed at Zagreb. This cover returned to London where it received the "Recovered from Aircrash / Zagreb 10-9-76 / Forwarded to / Destination" 4-line cachet, as well as a London FC OCT.18.1976 c.d.s. Group of 3 British South America Flight Graf Zeppelin Covers, 1933-34, includes a MAY.6.1933 South America flight cover mailed London May 6th and flown to Berlin. Flown on Berlin-Friedrichshafen connecting flight (red cachet) and then to South America with an Uruguay receiver on May 11th. Also an AUG.18.1934 flown cover with faint confirmation mark on front, again mailed in London. Arrived Uruguay on Sep 1st and is missing its backflap. Lastly, an OCT.13.1934 Graf Zeppelin flown cover, mailed London on Oct 12th with nice red confirmation cachet on front, as well as a purple Condor Zeppelin cachet, arrived Uruguay Oct. 18th. Note a few minor creases, still a scarce group. (Image)

Paraguay 1935 Graf Zeppelin Flown Cover to Tokyo, Japan, flown on Frost flight 127-231 from Paraguay to Germany. Paraguay stamps, including 1935 Zeppelin issue cancelled JUN.29.1935, arrived in Germany JUL.9.1935 (Stuttgart backstamp) and then sent on to Japan via Russia and the Trans-Siberia railway. A scarce routing and destination cover, with horizontal crease at middle plus a few other minor creases. (Image)

Group of 3 Boer War Prisoner of War Covers to St Helena and Bermuda, includes a cover to the Deadwood P.O.W. camp on St Helena, franked with a Cape of Good Hope 1d Hope Standing, tied by a Victoria West SEP.10.1900 squared circle cancel. Censored on arrival with a SEP.24 St Helena arrival c.d.s. Christoffel Paulsen was held at the Deadwood camp. Also a 1900 cover from the Orange Free State with a 1d V.R.I. overprint stamp has a "P.B.C." censor handstamp applied in South Africa, and is addressed to Burt's Island, Bermuda, where the irreconcilables were detained. Hamilton, Bermuda receiver on back and open on 3½ sides. Also a cover from Breda Netherlands to a Boer prisoner on St Helena mailed on AUG.30.1900. Has edge faults all around and no backstamps. United States 1954 New York City Recovered Crash Covers from an Italian Air Lines Plane Crash, Rome to New York Flight 451 crashed at Idlewild Airport on DEC.18.1954 and only 6 passengers survived. Oversized cover is from Rome to Oak Hill Ontario has a 4-line "Received / Damaged / Plane Crash / at N.Y." applied twice and a Montréal DEC.30.1954 transit c.d.s. The small cover is oil soaked but has a visible handstamp reading "Damaged Due to Airmail Interruption / Near N.Y. Int'l Airport DEC.18.1954". Typical condition for recovered crash covers. (Image)

United States Two 1933 Toledo Ohio Plane Crash Covers to Canada, United Airlines CAM-17 Newark to Chicago flight was destroyed by fire after it hit a boundary fence and nose-dived at the airport. 6,000 pieces were salvaged in burnt condition and forwarded, after receiving a Toledo backstamp and cachet reading "Damaged Due To / Air mail Interruption / At / Toledo Ohio / FEB 25 1933" in 5 lines. The cover to Vancouver has this cachet also has a Canadian Ambulance cover. The #8 size cover has the same cachet, but was forwarded to Victoria in a U.S. Post Office Ambulance cover due to the severity of the damage. (Image)

United States 1954 Plane Crash Covers at Norwich Connecticut on Air France Airplane, the Air France Paris to New York flight crashed at Norwich on AUG.3.1954. All on board were killed. The recovered mail received a 3-line "Delay Caused by Air / Mail / Interruption Near / Norwich Conn Aug 3 1954" which is on the Paris to N.R.C. in Ottawa cover. The U.S. Post Office Ambulance cover comes with this oversized cover. The cover to Toronto received the U.S. crash cachet on the back, as well as a "Received at Toronto / in Damaged Condition" 2-line cachet on the front. French cover and Ambulance cover are very fine, the G.B. cover is in the more usual crash cover condition. (Image)

United States Group of 7 Crash or Crash Related Covers, 1925-1998, includes a Roessler JUL.26.1925 Seattle to Vancouver cover where the plane crashed shortly after take off. Also 2 1926 covers AAML cat. #26 0406 from the Elko Nevada to Pasco Washington CAM first flight where the plane was forced down at Jordan Valley Oregon (mail was not damaged). Also a #27 0404 CAM-3 1927 cover Chicago to Dallas, where the plane hit a tree at DeKalb Illinois. Also two 1929 covers from CAM-25 Atlanta to Miami flight. The motor failed on take-off and the plane fell into the river. All of the above covers are addressed to, or have return addresses in Canada. The final cover is from the U.S.S. Grapple in 1998 which was involved in the search for the wreckage from the Swiss Air flight 111 which blew up over the Peggy's Cove area in Nova Scotia. Some minor faults, still overall very fine. United States Group of Three Plane Crash Covers, 1930-1941, includes AAMC cat. #30 1222 cover from the DEC.22.1930 plane crash at Hambra California. Recovered mail received the 2-line cachet "Damaged by Air Plane Wreck / December 22, 1930" Also a #31 0916 cover from the SEP.16.1931 plane crash at Oakland California where the plane exploded over Oakland Bay. The recovered mail received 3 types of cachets, this cover reads "Delayed Due to An / Air Mail Interrup / tion at Oakland / Cal SEP.16.1931" in 4 lines. Also a #41 1030 cover from a crash at Moorehead Minnesota where the plane was destroyed in a crash landing. Salvaged mail was badly burned. The remains of this one are in a Post Office Ambulance cover, and the Post Office included a slip reading "Damaged Due to Air Mail / Interruption near / Moorehead, Minn. / October 30, 1941" in 4 lines. Also included is a cover front from a crash in France on a flight from India to France (this one not included in the cat. value given). Typical crash cover condition. (Image)
