British WWI military mail in Egypt: DEC 1915 stampless OAS cover from Indian Expeditionary Force 119 (FPO 99 in Egypt) to Brigadier-General Harry Davis Watson at "Canal Defences" PORT-TAUFIQ tied by Indian Army censor cachet on front; arrival 31 XII 15 tied by civil Post Office postmark. Around this time Watson was Commander of 20th Indian Infantry Brigade attached to the 54th East Anglian Divsion in Egypt; listed in 9 Mar. 1917 supplement to London Gazette as being awarded Order of the Nile 3rd Class, listed as Colonel but as "temporary B-G". Opened gently at back; bottom flap tip torn & attached to cover.

Incoming mail to British WWI military mail in Egypt: 16 FEB 1917 greeting card-sized civilian stationary cover ex LONDON to 271st Brigade (Royal Field Artillery) of 54th (East Anglian) Division of EEF, franked 1 penny per period rate & tied by machine cancellation; front-stamped 10 MR 17 by scarce-period FPO 161 (161st Essex Brigade) postmark where re-routed to "Ammunition Dump MAZAR" - probably reference to Bir el Mazar, former Ottoman airbase & fortified post on Mediterranean coast of SInai, approaching El Arish: rare postal history as this datestamp recorded by Proud as being assigned to #1 (south) section of Suez Canal until 4 April; here used in connection to prepartions for 1st Battle of Gaza (26 March 1917), as the 161st crossed the Sinai desert in stages throughout February. Discovery piece. Slit open at top.
