Israel. 1948 early 1st postage rate period domestic tax on demonetized mail: 9-6-1948 local HAIFA commercial cover to TIVON franked with Mandate 10m Ba97 (3 teeth full), demonetized as of 16 May and now unaccepted: cover taxed twice the letter rate of 10m (manuscript notation), and paid using vertical pair 1st postage dues series 10m BaPD3 franks tied by full strike of 10-6-1948 Haifa Head Post Office postmark (unusually configured with Latin date above the Hebrew date); gently opened at back; as the 1st series postage dues entered local use 1 June, this is an early postage dues cover, very fine; estimated value $250+

Israel. 1948 1st postage rate period tax on Express demonetized mail: 7-7-1948 express commercial cover from HAIFA to Saint-Joseph College JAFFA franked 50m at the DO-1 postage period rate (10m letter rate + 40m express rate) but as affixed with now demonetized Mandate Ba100, rejected at the counter (although cancelled against regulations), and taxed twice the deficiency using vertical pair 1st postage dues series 50m with right gutter BaPD5 franks tied by same-date full strike of Haifa Head Post Office postmark; Arabic script below reads "Al Fareer school (Jaffa)"; unsealed, vertical fold. Early 1st postage dues cover + late use of invalid Mandate franking on genuine commercial cover; rare combination of rate, destination & multiple high franking: Jaffa was a military zone at this time (during War of Independence); estimated value $1200+. Israel. 1985 extreme inflation period taxed cover: 28 May - 1 July 1985 DO-59 postage rate period cover from Foreign Ministry in JERUSALEM to Bank HaPoalim in TEL AVIV, mailed unfranked as from Government office, but as the cover not clearly marked such it was taxed 100 Shekels at the hyper-inflationary period letter rate; slit open at top and left. This is the scarcest of all Israeli postal rate periods.
