Mexico, (Mazatlan) Mazatlan. Fancy wreathed "Franco" (Schatzkes 740) on 1866 French Intervention "Sello Negro" folded letter sheet to San Francisco, manuscript "SS John L. Stephens" ship endorsement and "San Francisco, Cal., 10, Mar 22" cds, Very Fine and choice, illustrated in Pietsch Imperial Eagles of Mexico 1864-66 (page 203), ex-Schimmer.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

On its return voyage, the steamer "John L. Stephens" was seized by Republicans at Cabo San Lucas, Baja California on April 6, 1866 for carrying arms to the French in Mazatlan. Capture of this American ship was a diplomatic problem because the U. S. government had recognized the Republican Juarez government and the American ship Stephens was caught supporting the unrecognized French government. Eagle stamps could not be used because the Maximilian government was not recognized.
