DOCUMENTS: 1828 Impressed Newspaper Duty 'CAPE OF GOOD HOPE/[crown & floral ornament]/ONE/PENNY' in red at U/R on the front page of the complete Government Gazette of 'Friday 7th March 1828', four separate sheets where removed from a bound volume (so originally two broadsheet pages), some aging marks. Each page is presented in two columns of English & Dutch; interesting contents include 'Sale of Newlands' announcing the sale of five lots of land between the High Road and the Liesbeek River. [The Cape Ordinance No.26 of 1826 imposed a tax of 1d per sheet on newspapers; perhaps the Government received a concessional rate?]
