POSTMARKS: Selection arranged chronologically as usual from German Period to Mandate, mostly part-strikes but many fine to very fine & a good number on piece, some very scarce including German 'DEULON', 'MARON' & 'NAMATANAI', straight-line 'Rabaul', small-part boxed 'RABAUL', several double-circle types, etc, quality of the strikes is quite variable, stamps STC £550+ not including the German Period or Engraved 6d Kookaburra; also three commercial & six philatelic covers in rather mixed condition.

1914-15 6mm Spacing '8d.' on 80pf SG 11 [Stg 12B, with Defective 'G' & 'I'], very lightly mounted, Cat £1000. Peter Holcombe Certificate (1991) states "Stamps from Setting 12 are extremely scarce (Gibbs x25)..."
1914-15 High Values with 3½-4mm Spacing '1s.' on 1mk SG 12, a couple of very minor blemishes on the reverse otherwise very fresh with large-part o.g., Cat £3500. Briefmarkenprufstelle Basel (Martin Eichele) Certificate (2010).
1914-15 High Values with 3½-4mm Spacing '1s.' on 1mk red SG 12 from the top of the sheet [Stg 4; Pos 3], very well centred, faint tonespots, full unmounted o.g., Cat £3500+ for mounted. Signed by Peter Holcombe & identified by him as "Ex Colonel Green". RPSofL Certificate (1982). [The margin - which is heavily toned & hinged - has been detached but is included in the lot]
1914-15 5mm Spacing '1d.' on 5d green with Inverted 'd' in '1d.' SG 17e [Stg 2 Pos 7?], well centred, a little aged, on small piece with 'STEPHANSORT/13/ * ' "frozen" cds in blue, Cat £3750. An underrated error. Holcombe Certificate states "I have recorded only 8 copies [sic] of this variety...They appear to come from two differing positions on the setting. All are used. A rare variety." [Sold at the Prestige auction of 13.6.2009 for $2210. The very fine "Ello" example - also on a small piece - sold at the Prestige auction of 14.3.2009 for $3910]
1914-15 5mm Spacing '2d.' on 20pf SG 19 upper-left corner block of 10 [Setting 2 Pos 1-5], minor perf separation/reinforcing between the first two units at the base otherwise unmounted, signed on the reverse by Peter Holcombe, Cat £500++ (as mounted singles). 1914-15 3½mm Postal Stationery Spacing on German New Guinea '2d.' on 10pf [Stg B] Gibbs #32B, small faults, the upper-left corner almost detached & reinforced, oval Rabaul datestamp in violet. A great rarity. Unlisted by Gibbons. Ex "Ello": sold at the Prestige auction of 14.3.2009 for $2675. BPA Certificate (2001).
Robert Gibbs states at page 94 "A few of these rarities were overprinted with the postal stationery setting, which was applied to one item at a time". He records four examples, three mint & one used, this example being a later discovery. Better centred than the similarly defective example Ex Robert Gibbs that sold at the Prestige auction of Tim Rybak's collection on 26.4.2008 for $4370.

1914 'G.R.I./3d.' on German-Pattern Registration Labels 'Kieta/(Deutsch-Neuguinea)' with No Stop after 'd ' SG 38b [Stg B Pos 4], extraordinarily well centred for these issues, unused, Cat £850. Superb!

1914 Surcharges on Marshall Islands High Values with 5½mm Spacing '2s.' on 2mk blue with Large 'S' from a Different Font in '2s.' SG 64oa [Stg 5B], two nibbled perfs at left otherwise superb!, very lightly mounted, Cat £19,000. Stamps from the 5½mm Setting are all extremely rare. BPA Certificate (2000). Robert Gibbs, writing in 1987, stated at page 127 "The variety Large 'S' from a differnt fount [sic] may well exist on this stamp, but it has not been recorded to date". [Fun fact: 'font' and 'fount' have the same meaning in general speech. However, in printing, it should always be 'font']
