Mexico, 1864, Eagle (1st Period), 4r green, Puebla. Cons 131-1864, sub 53, manuscript Huajuapan "Franco" cancel, mostly large margins, bright color, Very Fine, with only 20 sent, this being one of two known examples of the 4 reales "53" sub-consignment.

A very unusual sub-consignment as Huajuapan is an Oaxaca sub-office, but when occupied by French forces that had been based in Puebla, sub 53 was issued from there. Initially these where manuscript canceled "Franco".

Wide margins, in combination with 1864, Eagle (2nd Period), 2r yellow + 4r green, all cons 132-1864 and tied by "Jalapa, Setbre 6" cds's (Schatzkes 596) on 1864 registered cover front to Puebla, with straight line "Certificacion" handstamp alongside and oval handstamps at top and bottom (Schatzkes 597 & 601); front with a couple minor erosion spots and 2r stamp slightly reduced at right, F.-V.F., only 100 sent of the 4r and 8r issues, illustrated in Pietsch Imperial Eagles of Mexico 1864-66 (page 25).

Cons 130-1865, neat Guanajuato town cancels (Schatzkes 477), mostly large margins to slightly in at upper right, bright fresh color, Very Fine, illustrated in Corbett The Imperial Eagles of Maximilian's Mexico (page 145) and Pietsch Imperial Eagles of Mexico 1864-66 (page 155), ex-Corbett (the whereabouts of the MEPSI #10230 certificate cited in that sale is unknown).

Mexico, 1865, Eagle (4th Period), 1r blue (Matamoros). Cons 135-1865, clear to large margins, manuscript district name at bottom tying stamp to cover, canceled by "H. Matamoros, Abril 12" boxed date stamp (Schatzkes 732) on cover to New Orleans, La. 1866 receiver docketing at top, addressee's name in address panel removed most likely to avoid identification by Union forces that where occupying New Orleans during Reconstruction, still Very Fine for this, illustrated in Pietsch Imperial Eagles of Mexico 1864-66 (page 199).

THE ONLY RECORDED ON COVER EXAMPLE OF THE ONE REAL EAGLE ISSUE ON COVER.

Used Matamoros Eagle issues are quite rare with a little over 21 used examples of all stamps recorded by Corbett. Only three on cover usages are recorded to date.

AN EXTRAORDINARY USAGE OF THE UNIQUE 5TH PERIOD 8R EAGLE ISSUE ON COVER.

The 124-1866 consignment was sent to San Luis Potosi on July 16th and did not include any of the 8r Eagles. It is believed that this stamp must have been a replacement for lost or damaged stamps from that invoice.
