Austria. Austria: Joseph [von] Wertheimer commemoration medal in silver by Carl Radnitzky, 1867; 44.5mm, 34.85g; thickness: 2.75mm. Obverse legend: "Dem Scheidenden Vorstandpraeses" [The Outgoing Board President] + 2-line subtitle: "Die Beamten der Israel Cultusgemeinde in Wien 1867" [The Officials of the Israelite Religious Community of Vienna, 1867], surrounding Hebrew Proverbs quotation "A Faithful Man Shall Abound with Blessings" (dots over letters indicate word is laden with blessing); the word "Man" is misspelled. Reverse: left facing Wertheimer with name + "C. Radnitzky" below. Wertheimer (1800- 1887) was Austrian philanthropist & author; established Kindergarten system in Austria & helped Jews acquire trade skills/vocations; trustee & President of Vienna Jewish Community; received nobility from Emperor in recognition of his work; Forrer vol. V, p.15. A thinner bronze example sold at auction (2014) for €2500. The silver & bronze issues weigh the same in spite of identical size because of variations in their planchet thickness.

Austria. Austria: Gustav Mahler cast bronze plaque by Franz Stiasny, ND (circa. 1930's), mounted on wooden display; size (plaque only): 54.5 x 63mm; weight (whole unit) 173.3g. Plaque depicts right-facing relief profile of Mahler with his name on lower right, with "F. Stiasny" in upper left corner. Mahler (1860-1911) was a Jewish-Austrian composer, considered the leading composer and conductor of his generation; the medallist Stiasny (born Franz Czasny, 1872-1941; Forrer listed v.5 p. 684-5 & vol. 8 p 223) was born in Vienna and died in unconfirmed circumstances in Poland - suggesting, in light of his early age, that he may have been Jewish. Austria. Austria: Bruno Walter profile bronze uniface plaquette by Edwin Grienauer, c. 1962; size: 47 x 60.5mm; weight: 70.1g. Walter (1876-1962) was a German-born Jewish conductor, who conducted symphonies in Germany, Austria and New York; a close friend of Gustav Mahler and considered one of the foremost musicians of the 20th Century. The medallist Grienauer (1893-1964), is considered one of the more important Viennese sculptors and medallists of the 20th Century, and has - ironically - to his credit a bust of Adolf Hitler, which was displayed for a time in the lobby of the Vienna University until it was returned to him after World War II.
