Malta: The Mike Roberts FRPSL collection of the Malta Farthing, a remarkable and comprehensive assembly of the many printings and usage from 1901 to 1960 of the smallest denomination, in large boxed S.G. ‘Philatelic’ album, on display pages and loose, with 1/4d. Grand Harbour shades and watermarks incl. 1901 and 1910 “SPECIMEN” overprints, 1901 red-brown pane of 60, 1905 dull red-brown mint block of 24, 1910 deep brown plate no. 2 c.t.o. block of eight, 1/4d. K.G.V key plate shades incl. 1918 chocolate-brown mint block of 35, overprinted issues with varieties, 1922 “One/Farthing” on 2d. surcharges incl. dot to “i” of “Farthing” omitted [R. 4/4] in mint block of four, 1/4d. Melita with overprints, 1/4d. Arms of Malta designs with overprints, K.G.VI 1/4d. Grand Harbour redesign with 1948 overprints, Q.E.II 1/4d. Monument, an extensive range of around 125 covers and cards demonstrating combination use with other values for uprating incl. early 1901 (Jan. 25) 1/2d. stationery card to Argentina with 1/4d. pair, 1902 2d. registered envelope to Sfax bearing 1/4d. pair used with 1d. on 2d. (3), 1920 2d. registered envelope to Minnesota with 1/4d. (10) paying 21/2d. foreign rate, 1932 underpaid ‘Panton’ cover bearing 1/4d. pair with Cayman Is. 1d. pair affixed as postage due, 1935 charged airmail cover to London (underpaid by 1/2d.) with 1/4d. (2) and 1d. strip of four, sole usage incl. singles for printed matter rate on 1921 circular and 1930 “Militia Christi” newspaper, use in multiples for 1/2d. printed matter rate upward incl. 1/4d. pair on 1922 dealer’s pricelist to New York, 1/4d. strip of four paying 1oz. rate on 1916 censored cover to Alexandria, many scarcer destinations incl. Cape Colony, Fiji, Hungary, Iceland, Mauritius, Sweden, also “MALTA/1/4D/POSTAGE PAID” intaglio seal and later datestamp on newspaper wrappers (4) and unusually on local unsealed envelope with “THE MALTA TIMES” straight line, and 1/4d. Grand Harbour reproductions on cuff-links, tie-pin etc.
