1885 (2 July) registered cover from Tokyo to Rome, franked with Koban 2s and pair of 10s, tied by cork cancels, with Tokyo departure "thimble" cds alongside, red "R" handstamp below, violet "Yokohama Registered" and London transit (21 Aug), arriving in Italy on 28.8.86, vertical filing fold just through 2s, otherwise fine and attractive cover (the normal routing to Europe from Japan was via the Pacific. The rate was 10s plus 10s for Registration. There was a special 12s rate "via Brindisi" which was seldom used, but it made sense to use this routing when destination was Italy. This cover, while franked at the 12s+10s "via Brindisi" rate, was routed via London, indicating a trans-Pacific voyage) (Image)
