Jamaica: 1896 envelope from Britain to Jamaica endorsed ''via new york'' with stamps floated off, carried by the ''S.S. Ailsa'' which departed New York bound for the West Indies and South America but en route made anchor in thick fog and collided with the French vessel ''La Bourgogne''. Bearing label affixed in Jamaica from the G.P.O Jamaica George H Pearce dated 17th April, scarce. ? ? Minimal damage was made to the French ship but much damaged was sustained to the ''Alisa''. Coincidently the Postmaster of Jamaica George H Pearce was aboard the ship and was involved with the salvaging and process of recovered mail and possibly the only instance where a Postmaster this occurred. The ship after collision weighted anchor and headed towards Jamaica with the passengers and crew taking refuge in the rigging; when the ship made port (300 yards off Fort Hamilton) only the top of her funnel and her rigging were above water!
