Palestine Mandate. Palestine: Arab-revolt era "Kofer ha'Yishuv" female donor ring, 1938-1939; 2.1cm; 2.2g. Between 1938-48 the Jewish community in Palestine instituted self-defence fund-raising program (Kofer Ha'Yishuv - 'Community Levy'), a non-voluntary levy self-imposed on the Jews - on imports, entertainment, drinks, & even as imposed contributions during key Jewish holidays (evaders faced "honor courts"). Residents were encouraged to donate items of precious metals (an initiative called "Matat Takhshitim" - giving of jewelry), in exchange for which they would receive a 'token' - a ring, a pin, a document.

Israel. Entry ticket to the "First Knesset" - the first assembly of the elected Israeli Parliament, 9 March 1949; uniface; numbered 993; size: 10.5 x 7.9cm. The first meeting of the then titled "Constituent Assembly" ('Ha Asefa Ha Mekhonenet') took place already on 14 Feb. 1949, and there it voted to change its name to the "Knesset" and to call the first assembly of that body the "First Knesset". With the establishment of that Assembly, the existing Provisional State Council ('Moetzet HaMedina HaZmanit') dissolved itself and entrusted its powers to the Assembly, making it the State of Israel's legislative body. When this Knesset subsequently convened on 9 March, this was a day after David Ben-Gurion established the State's first government. Between 14-17 February the Assembly convened at the Jewish Agency building in Jerusalem; from 9 March to 25 December 1949, the Knesset convened in Tel Aviv - here, at the Dizengoff House, and thence again in Jerusalem.

Israel. Israel: khaki denim hat of the Municipality of Rechovot, circa. 1950s. The visored hat is marked "Municipality of Rechovot" in black, in Hebrew on the front. Inside on the crown is a diamond-shaped thick-paper makers-mark similar in style to the diamond marks of other Israeli hat makers of the time; the sweat-band is of a brown faux-leather type used in Israeli military and civilian hats of the 1950's (probably a substitute for scarce leather during this Austerity period). The sweatband contains the original cardboard ring insert, intended to retain the shape of this otherwise soft hat. The use of the khaki color was popular in Israeli clothes of the post-War [of Independence] 1950s, with Prime Minister Ben-Gurion setting the tone himself, and with the color implying a mixture of popular defence as well as popular settlement and development of the State.
