1922-1970 MINT & USED COLLECTION: Superb collection in binder, attractively presented on display pages. Includes mixed mint & used ranges of the various Provisional & Free State opts. with many high value Sea Horses. 1922 (Feb.) 2/6d to 10/- mint & add. 2/6d shade used SG 17/21; 1922 (June) 2/6d & 5/- mint SG 44/45 (£525); 1922 (Dec.) 2/6d to 10/- mint SG 64/66; 1925 (Aug.) 2/6d to 10/- mint SG 83/85; 1927-28 2/6d used, 5/- & 10/- mint SG 86/88 and 1935 re-engraved trio mint SG 99/101 (£400), etc. Then apparently complete for all basic issues, mint or used, to 1970 inc. 1937 'St. Patrick' high value trio mint SG 102/104 (£450) and the 1940 changed wmk group inc. shade vars. mint 2/6d, 5/- (2) & 10/- (2). A very fine assembly, very well presented, with a wealth of background information on the issues. Also, 2 stock books with duplicated accumulation of used issues from 1923 to 1990s. (damaged) to NY with GB 2d orange in the two-month period prior to ovpt values; Feb./May 1922 pair of envs. with 2d orange ovpts showing change from Dublin to Baile 'Atha Cliath' in the date portion of the machine cancel; July 1922 part front sent reg. with ½d to 2½d ovptd values all tied by FULHAM cds; July 1922 env. to Manchester with ½d green ovpt plus 1½d brown without ovpt though untaxed; Dec. 1922 env. to Dublin with ½d green ovpt plus ½d green no ovpt both tied by emergency Krag machine cancel; 1923 wrapper apparently ex GB to Dublin with GB ½d green cancelled on arrival; Sep. 1923 pair of Swiss 2c envs. sent reg. with ovptd values added on arrival, both with 1910 Bern Exhibition labels on the flap; 1923 GB 1½d brown PC to USA with 'LEARN IRISH' cancel; 1936 env. to Wales with GB 1d red pair ovptd rare (though doubtful at this date) 'IRISH/FREE STATE/PROV. GOVT.'; and undated env. to Dublin with GB 4d orange not allowed for postage so endorsed '4d to pay' but no other markings. 1923 THE VERY RARE AND FAMOUS "LONG PUIST" CDS - 10 May 1923 (the last day) env. (light vert. crease away from the stamps) to Croydon with KGV ovptd ½d green (2) and 1d red each tied by very fine and very rare "LONG PUIST/DHUN LAOGHAIRE" [SHIP POST] cds with a fourth strike nicely placed at left. RARE RED DUBLIN "CHARITY LETTER/POST PAID" ON COMPLETE TURNED "NATIVE IRISH" LANGUAGE FREE COVER; Spectacular 1822/3 two-way turned mainly printed EL (mainly printed contents ref. recommended Irish Schoolmaster) with printed "IRISH SOCIETY for promoting the Education of the Native Irish, through the medium of their own Language" heading above the address, sent from Dublin to "Glencar, Manorhamilton" one way (with partly fine very rare red Dublin "CHARITY LETTER/POST PAID" (affected by stain) on the front and a faint Dublin d.s. of 10 July 1822(or 1823?) on the reverse; it was then returned and re-posted (with 22 July 1823 Dublin "FREE" d.s.) with the same "IRISH SOCIETY.... Language" heading above the fully printed "SIR EDWARD S. LEES, POST-OFFICE, DUBLIN" address posted from "DROMAHAIR/107" (v. fine mileage on the front) and charged for the local Dublin 1d Post with v. fine h.s. "1" mark. We have only recorded one other example of this printed "IRISH SOCIETY..." heading (sold for £1,100+BP in our 9 Sept. 2021 auction); this example ex our Jan. 2010 auction (lot 776; realised £500+BP). VERY HIGH POSTAL RATE ON "MALTA/F" COVER EX "CORFU" WITH "Redirected at [DERRY/118]" & DUBLIN "C" CROWN; Remarkable 14 Oct. 1823 EL (minor wear inc. closed seal tear clear of marks) from a junior naval officer on "H.M.S. Dispatch, Corfu" with a mainly very fine green Falmouth "MALTA/F" d.s. (light fold) on the top flap. Sent to his father in Kilderry but redirected to "Dublin" and so with high single-sheet rates "3/7", "4/5" and then "5/3"(2/3 Packet + 1/2 Falmouth to Holyhead + 2d Packet to Dublin + 10d on to Derry + 10d back to Dublin). It was endorsed "Redirected at" in red beside a faint red "DERRY/118" mark and the "4/5" rate was changed in Dublin with the scarce red Dublin "C" in Inspector's Crown mark. The contents include; "Our station will be up at these Islands, but always direct my letters to Malta as before... The Packet is going to sail directly".
