Gibraltar: 1805 (Apr. 4) entire letter from Edward Michell (later Brigadier General Sir Edward Thomas Michell, CB, 1787-1841) whilst on garrison duty, addressed to his sister Eliza at Gloucester, with straight line “LISBON” and rated “2/3”, the letter carried by packet from Lisbon to Falmouth. An interesting letter with news including the expected departure the next day of a vessel that would connect with the packet from Lisbon, this service not extended to Gibraltar until the following year. Gibraltar: 1836 (July 28) entire to Edinburgh showing on reverse the rare Falmouth “GIBRALTAR/F” without date, a very fine strike in a vivid shade, red “AUG/C 31 E/1836” alongside, rated “3/1” and with framed additional “1/2” on address side, the partially crosswritten message (transcription included) headed “H M Ship Asia/at sea July 28th 1836” written by Thomas Cochran on approach to Gibraltar.
