1857 (Sept 10): Entire letter from Gibraltar to Genova endorsed 'Vapor Tiber', franked by Great Britain 1855 1 d. rose-red, perf. 14, horizontal pair tied by superb strikes of the "G" in bars obliterator (Type Z2), with double arc "Gibraltar" circular datestamp in blue at left (Sept 10). "Via / Di Mare" handstamp in red on front and charge altered in manuscript from "3" decimi to "15 cmi" in black. Reverse with Genova arrival (Sept 13). An important entire - the Great Britain stamps had been authorised for use in Gibraltar on August 19, 1857, with the first shipment arriving on September 3. This entire is the earliest recorded usage of both the adhesive stamps and the "G" obliterator in Gibraltar and the earliest recorded usage of British stamps being authorised as "Used Abroad" in a Colony - rather than in a theatre of War. A superb and rare entire.rnrnProvenance: Collection Geoffrey Osborn, RL, London, 14 May 1991, lot 1153; Harmers, London, 30 April 2001, lot 907. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image)
