RATTLESNAKE crest on flap, bearing GB 1866-69 1 d. red (6) one of whitch has been removed from another cover and reused (on price!), each cancelled with ´11´ in barred oval (G.P.O.) cancellation and showing PORTSMOUTH arrival cds. (24.5) on reverse, recipient´s notation ´written at Cape Coast Castle April 1871, recd May 24th´ below adhesives; edges and corners worn, still an unusual and attractive cover. COSTA DE ORO. 1872. Stampless registered cover from CAPE COAST to EDINBURGH, struck with circular PAID AT CAPE COAST CASTLE datestamp in red (June 12) with framed REGISTERED handstamp alongside. Prepaid ´5´ and ´1´ (pence) in red manuscript (1d. to the Colony). Struck on arrival with REGISTERED / LIVERPOOL datestamp and PAID / LIVERPOOL / 3 PACKET / BR JY 72 datestamp error in red (July 3). Reverse with Edinburgh and Murrayfield cds´s. A fine and VERY RARE cover. (Image1)
