1861 (Feb. 16) New York N.Y. to St. Petersburg, Russia. Blue folded cover by Prussian Closed Mail with "New York '23' Feb 16" debit exchange cds to Prussia, endorsed "p Vigo via Ostende" at top, carried by Inman Line Vigo from New York Feb. 16th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 1st, red Aachen (3.2) backstamp transit with large blue manuscript "12/2" debit to Russia, Russian magenta "56" due rating on back, blue J.W. Schmidt & Co. New-York merchants oval, Very Fine.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

The Russian postage due of 56 kopecks marked in magenta pen on the reverse. This consisted of 46 kopecks to cover Prussian debit and 10 kopecks Russian internal fees. Aachen marked "12/2" in bright blue ink to show breakdown of Prussian debit to Russia, 12 silbergroschen "foreign" transit and 2 silbergroschen German transit.

AN EXCEPTIONAL DEPRECIATED CURRENCY COVER CARRIED BY THE GALWAY LINE.

The Galway Line only operated from 1858 to 1864. Departures were from Galway, Ireland prior to August 1863, when the Line was reorganized and began sailing from Liverpool and calling at Galway. This cover was carried on the second of only 11 voyages originating in Liverpool; the letter had missed the Sep. 1 departure from Liverpool so was picked up on the way westward.
