Cat No:31

1876-77 'VR' Underprints on Laid Paper 1d blue as SG 31 but with the 'VR' Underprint Inverted & Misplaced (also with part of a second impression at far-right), large-part o.g. Unlisted by Gibbons. Ex Gerald Patterson: sold for $975. BPA Certificate (1966) as the then SG 81 states "...is genuine". [As noted by a previous owner, "...the inverted overprint may have escaped notice by reason of it being so much off-centre, the inverted 'V' being at first sight easily mistaken for an 'R'...". Of course, because the underprint was printed before the design, technically it is the design that is inverted!]

Cat No:37a

1882 commercial cover to Saxony with Altered Dies Perf 12½ 2d & 6d SG 37a & 38 tied by 'LEVUKA' cds, very fine strikes on face & reverse of the impressive 'DETAINED FOR ("2D")/ADDITIONAL POSTAGE' h/s, Perf 10x12½ 2d SG 47 (a deeper shade) added & tied by Sunburst cancel, London transit & superb 'KIRCHBERG i SACHSEN' arrival b/s, curious 3-line h/s of a Saxony educator in violet on the face, some soiling. A remarkable cover, illustrated by David Alford at page 70. Ex Gerald Patterson. [The only example of this cachet noted by us. Ted Proud at page 301 records only a 'DEFICIENT POSTAGE/FINE' h/s for Levuka, used 1887-93. Proud's 1888 cover to Samoa with Deficient Postage h/s of Suva sold at the Macray Watson auction of 26.10.1999 for $3190]

Ex Gerald Patterson. [David Alford at pages 100-101 records 10 used envelopes, several of which have significant faults. This is the earliest of them, the only one from the first year of use, & perhaps the only "commercial" example. Colonel Harrie Evans' 1893 example & Don Welsh's 1894 example sold at the Prestige auctions of 29.9.2001 & 14.4.2005 for $3960 & $4370 respectively]

Cat No:69 (very fine

1897 commercial linen-lined cover (reduced to 228x124mm) with Hedemann Evers & Co Levuka cachet on the flap, to the parent company in Germany "Via Vancouver" with remarkable solo franking of QV 5/- SG 69 (very fine) tied by Levuka cds, Suva (b/s), Liverpool & London transits & very fine Hamburg arrival b/s, two vertical folds well clear of the stamps, a bit soiled & with minor peripheral faults caused by the bulky contents. Ex Gerald Patterson. A highly significant cover, being the only commercial 5/- franking known to us. [NB: the catalogue value for the 5/- of £32 is for the common CTO remainders. Commercially used examples are very elusive & worth a large premium]

1914 stampless OHMS cover with superb strike of the brass straight-line 'WAIVOU' h/s, 'GPO SUVA/28/OCT/ 1914/FIJI' arrival cds on the face, boxed 'T ("2d")' & a largely fine strike of the rare boxed 'PLEASE RETURN ENVELOPE/TO GPO WITH/NAME OF SENDER' (Proud #I27, recorded 5.12.1912 only) both suggesting that this was an unauthorised use of an OHMS envelope, duly endorsed "From S Lalanaisu/Fijian - Waivou", overall soiling & with pinholes at upper-left from being affixed in a Post Office file. Ex Gordon Rodger (2007) & Gerald Patterson. [One of the most unusual straight-line town h/s covers of Fiji. Also, the later of only two recorded examples of the boxed handstamp]
