Austrian Post Office in Chios (Cesme) 1852 (March 28): Entire letter from Cesme to Trieste, crossed to denote prepayment, struck initially in error with fine strike of oval framed AGENZIA DEL LLOYD AUSTRIACO / SCIO in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 559). This handstamp deleted and struck alongside with CESME / MAR 29. datestamp in black and FRANCA adjacent (figs. 1 and 2) in black. Reverse with Trieste arrival (4/4) in red with prepaid Lloyd rate '12' in manuscript. Rare and exceptional entire, mentioned in Tchilinghirian, vol. Austrian Post Office in Chios 1861: Entire letter from Chios to Malta dent partially prepaid with circular SCIO-CESME datestamp (29/6) in green (Tchilinghirian fig. 560) with FRANCO alongside (unlisted) in same ink. Prepaid as far as Genova with manuscript '20/28' on reverse in blue crayon (20 soldi Lloyd, 8 soldi for Italy), alongside 'Desenzano-Milan' TPO cds (July 5) and Genova cds (July 6). Italian '2' decimi handstamp deleted in manuscript. Malta arrival cds (July 18) and charged '2/4d.' due in manuscript altered to '6' pence in total to pay upon receipt.
