Chad. Chadian postal boycott of Israel: 29-8-1980 airmail commercial cover from JERUSALEM to local addressee MOUSSORO Chad, franked 27.15L during new "[Old] Shekel" currency period (starting 22 Feb 1980 - here worth 2.715 IS) & tied by 2 strikes of JERUSALEM-27 postmark (the customs section of the main postage depot in Givat Shaul - a rare department); at this time Chad under Libyan attack/occupation since 22 March (3rd Libyan incursion in Chadian-Libyan conflict/civil war of 1978-87) & capital captured 16 Dec.; cover received & stamped twice "relations suspended | return to sender" using French-language handstamp K-Type-I & returned undelivered: unclear if this is a result of Chad's suspension of relations with Israel as of Sept. 1972 (under Saudi-Libyan influence) or as a result of the then-present military crisis - the latter most likely as Chad continued to maintain discreet & close military with Israel from 1972 onward. Very unusual postal link; this is the only known example of the Chadian postal boycott, rare as from war/occupation period + Israeli currency change reflected in the postage rate. A rare instance of direct mail from Israel being refused service at the destination (and not at local post office of dispatch). (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image)
