Antarctica: Norwegian, British, Swedish Expedition 1949-52: Envelope with strikes of expedition cachet (featuring penguin only), seen on mail from expedition members only, endorsed on flap and addressed by expedition assistant meteorologist Gösta Liljequist to his aunt in Stockholm with enclosed message on card headed “Maudheim 27 jan-51”, bearing Spain 30c. and 45c. cancelled by London F.S. “PAQUEBOT/POSTED AT SEA” machine cancellation of Mar. 9. Also contemporary photos of the “Norsel” and the base. During the expedition Gösta Hjalmar Liljequist (1914-1995) became the first to observe a rare type of optical halo phenomenon, subsequently named the “Liljequist parhelia”. Photo. (Image1)
